Waterfront Director (1 Position)

Our intention each summer is that the life of every person who comes to camp is impacted for Christ, including those who are on staff. As the Waterfront Director, you occupy a critical leadership role, overseeing one of the most high-impact areas of camp. This is an opportunity to lead and disciple a specialized team, ensure the safety of our guests, and be mentored in your own walk with Christ while gaining high-level management experience.

General Qualifications

  • Age & Education: At least 18 years of age. Completion of one year of college is required; two or more years is highly preferred.

  • Spiritual Maturity: A personal relationship with the Lord, a basic understanding of the Bible, and a commitment to the values of Portage Lake Bible Camp and the Evangelical Covenant Church.

  • Character: A positive Christian role model with a servant-hearted attitude and a desire to see those around them grow personally and spiritually.

  • Leadership Experience: Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Ministry leadership or previous camp experience is highly preferred.

  • Environment: Eager and able to live and serve in a rustic, “unplugged” camp setting.

Specific Technical Qualifications

  • Certifications: Must hold current American Red Cross Lifeguarding, CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications.

  • Boating: Possesses a valid Michigan Boating Safety Certificate.

  • Skill Set: Must be a strong swimmer with experience operating both motorized and non-motorized watercraft.

  • Preferred: Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification is highly valued.

Duties & Responsibilities

Waterfront Leadership & Safety

  • Safety Oversight: Promote safety, learning, and fun for all; strictly implement and enforce all PLCBC waterfront policies and procedures.

  • Staff Coordination: Schedule and coordinate lifeguard staff throughout the summer.

  • Stewardship: Responsible for the maintenance and care of all watercraft, docks, and equipment. Keep the waterfront clean and free of debris.

  • Administration: Submit incident reports as needed and provide a thorough evaluation of the waterfront area at the end of the summer.

Discipleship & Community

  • Staff Mentorship: Build intentional relationships with waterfront staff, including bi-weekly one-on-ones to provide discipleship, feedback, and encouragement.

  • Culture: Act as an initiator and supporter of a healthy, life-giving staff community.

  • Cabin Support: Support counseling staff by engaging with an assigned cabin throughout the day as applicable.

Operational Participation

  • Accountability: Report directly to the Program Director and participate in all staff training and onboarding.

  • Program Engagement: Attend events, games, and chapel services to remain fully integrated into camp life.

  • General Service: Maintain a tidy cabin and shared spaces; assist with general camp cleaning, maintenance, and kitchen duties as required.

  • Reliability: Timely attendance and active participation in all staff meetings and debriefs.

Note: As the Waterfront Director, your vigilance ensures the physical safety of our community, creating a secure environment where campers can encounter Christ without distraction.

**Reference letters do not have to be submitted just the application and the pending references.

**Applicants must commit to the entirety of the PLCBC summer season (end of May-mid August) to receive bonus.

New staff applicants must have 3 types references: one academic, one spiritual, and one professional. Returning applicants are required to have 1 new reference. You may not use family members, peers or friends, anyone under the age of 18, or a current PLCBC staff member as a reference.
