Counseling Staff (7 Male/7 Female positions)
Position Summary
- Each cabin leader will also be assigned a specialty area: lifeguarding, ropes instructor, arts & crafts, sports/athletics, etc.
Counseling Staff serve in a key ministry role by leading, mentoring, and caring for campers in a Christ-centered camp environment. This position is responsible for building meaningful relationships with a cabin group, guiding campers through daily activities and spiritual growth, and helping create a safe, fun, and supportive camp experience.
Counseling Staff work closely with the Program Director and Summer Program Coordinators, participate fully in camp life and staff training, and model Christian character consistent with the mission and values of Portage Lake Bible Camp and the Evangelical Covenant Church.
General Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Completed at least one year of college or equivalent post–high school experience
- Demonstrates a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and a foundational understanding of the Bible
- Models Christ-like character with a positive, servant-hearted attitude
- Commits to living and working in alignment with the beliefs and values of Portage Lake Bible Camp and the Evangelical Covenant Church
- Works well as a team player and is willing to assist beyond assigned duties as needed
- Possesses a strong desire to foster personal and spiritual growth in others
- Is eager and able to live and serve in a rustic, unplugged camp environment
- Experience working with children in a ministry or camp setting is preferred
- American Red Cross Lifeguarding, CPR/AED/First Aid, and/or Challenge Course certification is a plus
Duties and Responsibilities
- Reports to the Program Director and Summer Program Coordinators
- Participate in and fully engage with all aspects of staff training and onboarding
- Lead a group of 8–12 campers (grades 2–12) alongside a co-counselor or cabin buddy throughout the week
- Build intentional relationships with each camper
- Attend all chapel services with campers
- Lead Bible studies and small group discussions within the cabin
- Facilitate a variety of small- and large-group games for all ages
- Facilitate or assist in program areas during free time, including:
- High ropes
- Waterfront
- Athletics/games
- Arts & crafts
- Camp store
- Maintain a clean and tidy cabin and shared spaces
- Participate in general camp cleaning, maintenance, and assist in the kitchen as assigned
- Attend and actively participate in all staff meetings and debriefs in a timely manner

**Applicants must commit to the entirety of the PLCBC summer season (end of May-mid August) to receive bonus.
New staff applicants must have 3 types references: one academic, one spiritual, and one professional. Returning applicants are required to have 1 new reference. You may not use family members, peers or friends, anyone under the age of 18, or a current PLCBC staff member as a reference.
