Grounds Crew (6 Positions)

The Grounds Crew is responsible for the daily upkeep and appearance of the camp property, ensuring outdoor spaces are safe, attractive, and functional for all. This entry-level role focuses on lawn care, landscaping, and field maintenance.

Working closely with the Facilities Director, Grounds Crew members are fully integrated into camp life, participating in staff training and programming. This position requires a servant-hearted individual who models Christ-centered character in alignment with the mission of Portage Lake Bible Camp and the Evangelical Covenant Church.

General Qualifications

  • Age: Must be at least 16 years old. (Staff of Senior High age are encouraged to attend Senior High week as campers).

  • Spiritual Maturity: Demonstrates a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and a foundational understanding of Scripture.

  • Character: Models Christ-like character with a positive attitude and a desire to foster spiritual growth in others.

  • Teamwork: Functions well as a team player and is willing to assist beyond assigned duties.

  • Commitment: Alignment with the beliefs and values of PLBC and the Evangelical Covenant Church.

  • Environment: Eager to live and serve in a rustic, “unplugged” camp environment.

Core Responsibilities

Landscaping & Lawn Care

  • Turf Management: Mowing, watering, and weed whacking throughout the property.

  • Plant Care: Planting, weeding, mulching, and watering garden beds.

  • Arboriculture: Trimming, pruning, and shaping shrubs and trees to maintain landscape health and aesthetics.

Property Upkeep

  • Debris Removal: Regularly clearing leaves, sticks, trash, and other debris from camp grounds.

  • Waste Management: Recycling cardboard from the kitchen and ensuring outdoor spaces remain litter-free.

  • Athletic Fields: Marking the soccer and softball fields for use during family camps.

Camp Life & Programming

  • Accountability: Report directly to the Facilities Director; attend all staff meetings and debriefs on time.

  • Staff Training: Fully engage in all aspects of onboarding and staff training.

  • Cabin Support: Support counseling staff by engaging with an assigned cabin during the day (as applicable) and sleeping in the cabin each night.

  • Program Involvement: Attend events, games, and chapel services unless otherwise directed.

Facility Assistance

  • Maintenance Support: Assist the Facilities Director with routine maintenance projects and other operational needs as assigned.

  • Shared Spaces: Maintain a clean and tidy personal cabin and contribute to the upkeep of all shared staff areas.

Note: As a member of the Grounds Crew, you serve as a steward of God’s creation, preparing the physical space so that campers and guests can encounter Christ without distraction.

Apply by February 14th to be eligible for a $150 bonus if hired!

**Reference letters do not have to be submitted just the application and the pending references.

**Applicants must commit to the entirety of the PLCBC summer season (end of May-mid August) to receive bonus.

New staff applicants must have 3 types references: one academic, one spiritual, and one professional. Returning applicants are required to have 1 new reference. You may not use family members, peers or friends, anyone under the age of 18, or a current PLCBC staff member as a reference.
