Kitchen Crew (6 Positions)

The Kitchen Crew plays a vital role in the mission of “Every life impacted for Christ” by creating an inviting atmosphere through meal service and hospitality. This team directly shapes the guest experience through the care and quality of the dining environment.

All summer kitchen positions operate on a two-shift rotation. Shift assignments are discussed and finalized during staff training. This role requires a heart for service, a punctual nature, and a commitment to the values of Portage Lake Bible Camp and the Evangelical Covenant Church.

General Qualifications

  • Age: Must be at least 16 years old. (Staff of Senior High age are encouraged to attend Senior High week as campers).

  • Spiritual Maturity: Possesses a personal relationship with the Lord and a basic understanding of the Bible.

  • Character: Models a positive Christian attitude with a teachable, servant-hearted spirit and a desire for personal growth.

  • Teamwork: Works effectively within a team and is willing to assist in other areas as needed.

  • Reliability: Dependable and punctual; able to learn and maintain a strict work schedule.

  • Environment: Eager to live and serve in a rustic, “unplugged” camp setting.

Core Responsibilities

Meal Preparation & Service

  • Setup: Prepare the dining environment by setting out utensils and dishes, setting up the salad bar, making coffee, and restocking juice and milk stations.

  • Food Prep: Assist with light cooking and food preparation as directed. Specific safety instructions are provided for handling equipment and ready-to-eat foods.

  • Active Service: Monitor and restock buffet lines, cold bars, and other food stations throughout mealtimes to ensure guest needs are met.

  • Inventory: Assist with restocking food items and supplies following kitchen deliveries.

Sanitation & Facility Upkeep

  • Dish Room: Operate the dishwasher and properly store all cleaned, sanitized, and air-dried kitchenware.

  • Dining Hall Maintenance: Keep shared spaces—including the game room, dining area, and bathrooms—clean and in good repair.

  • Deep Cleaning: Participate in weekly deep cleans of the kitchen and dining hall after each camp session.

  • Seasonal Cleaning: Contribute to major cleaning projects during staff training and at the end of the summer season.

Camp Life & Participation

  • Reporting: Accountable to the Food Service Director, Kitchen Manager, and Kitchen Lead.

  • Training: Fully engage in all aspects of staff onboarding and training.

  • Meetings: Attend and participate in all scheduled staff meetings and debriefs.

  • Stewardship: Maintain a clean and tidy personal cabin and contribute to the upkeep of all shared staff living spaces.

Note: No previous food service experience is necessary. We are looking for individuals who can follow specific instructions and serve our guests with excellence and joy.

**Reference letters do not have to be submitted just the application and the pending references.

**Applicants must commit to the entirety of the PLCBC summer season (end of May-mid August) to receive bonus.

New staff applicants must have 3 types references: one academic, one spiritual, and one professional. Returning applicants are required to have 1 new reference. You may not use family members, peers or friends, anyone under the age of 18, or a current PLCBC staff member as a reference.
